Memorial Day

In an effort to remember the innocent children who perished in the Holocaust, the Holocaust Museum in Houston is collecting 1.5 million butterflies. The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition for all to witness. In order to help with this project, the Holocaust Education Committee will be hosting a butterfly exhibit on campus. We will have an arts and crafts table set up in the West Mall area, at which anyone passing by can make their own butterfly, hang it up on the display (which will also be set out on the West Mall), and learn more about the atrocities of the Holocaust, and how they can get involved with our committee. Our goal is to have 1,000 beautifully made butterflies, which will all be sent to the Holocaust Museum in Houston to comprise a final spectacular work of art.

The butterfly idea originated from the poem “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” which was written by a young boy in the Terezin concentration camp. The poem illustrates a range of emotions raging from fear to hope to despair, felt by the innocent children, almost all of whom died during the Holocaust. The poem is a piece of literature that tells a personal story, a story that goes way beyond the statistics!!
